Filmmaker Anonno Mamun gets banned forever

Bangladeshi filmmaker Anonno Mamun has been banned forever from the Bangladesh Directors’ Association for charges of human trafficking in Malaysia on Saturday. Montazur Rahman Akbar, the association’s member and senior director, recently told the press that they held an official meeting where letters containing the official decision will be sent to each member of the association. He also said that according to recent reports, Mamun confessed to his crimes to the Malaysian police. Therefore, in order to confirm the matter, the association contacted the Malaysian High Commission in Dhaka. His most recent film, “Bandhan,” remains undecided by the association whether it will be released or not. Mamun was arrested in Malaysia on December 24 with 19 others - including his accomplices and the people who were being trafficked - with charges of human trafficking, with an alibi of a cultural event.

If proven, according to the Malaysia’s internal legal regulations, he could be sent to jail for 15 years. Previously, Mamun’s membership with the directors’ association was cancelled during an urgent meeting on December 26, 2015, for charges of fraud certification and lying in the name of joint venture productions.  He, however, had later regained his membership through an undertaking.
