Every citizen deserves and expects the protection of the law.
Unfortunately, the record of our law enforcement agencies in ensuring public safety is often pitiful to say the least.
Extortion is at an all time high, and criminals are so emboldened that extortionists have started making phone calls to bank managers demanding money.
Lawlessness has a huge impact on investment in Bangladesh. It is a major deterrent to much needed foreign investment, as multinational companies are reluctant to invest in countries where their managers and executives may be targeted by extortionists or kidnappers.
The sorry state of law and order also encourages capital flight as many Bangladeshi business people are motivated to relocate their families abroad for this very reason.
Sufficient security measures must be taken to uphold the rule of law and guarantee the safety and security of all citizens.
The home ministry must take more effective steps to act against criminals and those who impede the honest administration of business in the country.
All practical measures have to be implemented to reduce the amount of time required to close investigations into criminal cases. The slow pace at which they proceed currently helps to enable corruption and encourages criminals to keep committing crimes. The ruling party must set an example by not protecting activists and supporters found to be engaging in criminal acts.
The government must provide the public with more safety and security from criminals so that fear of crime does not continue to be a blight on the nation. Extortion must not go unpunished.
