The tragic collapse of roof shuttering at an under-construction municipal building in Pirganj, Rangpur - which claimed the lives of two workers and left several others injured - is yet another incident that shows Bangladesh’s broken construction oversight.
Day after day, day labourers risk their lives on sites where elementary structural safety measures are routinely sacrificed to cut costs and accelerate deadlines. That this fatal disaster occurred on a public municipal site built under the auspices of the local government makes the negligence all the more indefensible, although, regrettably, not surprising.
In the immediate aftermath, law enforcement have detained the municipal secretary of Pirganj. While preliminary administrative detentions signal initial action, we have seen that all too frequently, high-profile construction disasters end with low-level officials or site supervisors scapegoated to appease public outrage, while influential individuals and decision-makers walk away untouched.
A superficial investigation will not suffice, not for this particular incident nor for future ones. We require a rigorous, independent technical probe to uncover the root causes of this collapse.
Law enforcement must ensure that everyone responsible be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, regardless of their political connections or administrative rank.
This is far from an isolated incident; structural collapses, fallen scaffolding, and unprotected worksites remain a recurring issue across our country. Construction work must not continue to be a death sentence for vulnerable labourers earning daily wages.
We must enforce strict workplace safety standards, conduct site audits, and impose severe criminal penalties on negligence to begin correcting this issue. Until accountability reaches the very top, human lives will continue to be treated as cheap collateral on our building sites.
