A friend in Denmark

We are highly encouraged by Denmark’s partnership with local institutions to advance human rights, promote independent media, and expand rehabilitation services for survivors of torture and violence.

As our nation looks to rebuild and indeed push on as an economy, it is imperative that, beyond economic growth numbers, we also focus on development through committed support in human rights, mental health, and media freedom - three significant components of judging a nation’s overall progress. As such, this collaboration is essential for our nation’s social development.

What is particularly notable is the non-traditional approach here, with Denmark’s approach extending beyond traditional aid and instead focusing on strengthening human capital by supporting Bangladeshi organizations in these specific domains.

Such groundwork is vital for creating an enabling environment; after all, without ensuring rights, having sound mental health, and in particular, having media freedom, we will be unable to pave the way for economic activities to flourish.

Ultimately, we need the foundation for economic turnaround; if we are to increase investments and maintain social stability, we need to have the sort of society which inspires confidence in investors and people alike. Such societal strengthening is critical as we seek to develop economically as well.

Denmark’s multifaceted strategic partnership offers us an important mix of social and economic support that will help in our long-term goal of transforming our country into a more equitable, competitive, and sustainable economy. It is the sort of partnership that goes beyond immediate development goals and instead helps lay the foundation for inclusive growth that benefits all layers of society.
