As the world observes the International Day of Persons with Disabilities today, Bangladesh stands at a pivotal moment in our pursuit of inclusivity and equality.
This day serves as an important reminder that building a truly inclusive nation requires a commitment to leaving no one behind, regardless of abilities.
In Bangladesh, the journey toward inclusivity has made significant strides, but challenges persist for persons with disabilities. Recognizing and addressing these challenges is not just a moral imperative but essential if we are to have a society that harnesses the full potential of every citizen.
Creating an inclusive nation begins with dismantling physical and societal barriers that hinder the participation of persons with disabilities.
We have been busy updating our infrastructure, and as we do so, be they public spaces, transportation, or establishments, they must be designed with accessibility in mind, ensuring that everyone can navigate and contribute to society without hindrance.
Education in particular is a cornerstone of inclusivity. Thus, Bangladesh must continue to enhance educational opportunities for persons with disabilities, providing tailored support and accommodations.
Furthermore, with new technologies emerging, it is imperative that we these are designed with accessibility in mind; digital divide continues to grow as a deterrent to equality, and depriving persons with disabilities from access to these emerging technologies will only exacerbate this issue.
International Day of Persons with Disabilities serves as a call to action. We must ensure that every citizen, regardless of abilities, can actively participate in and contribute to the progress of our nation.
