As we continue on our journey to fostering stronger ties with nations across the globe, it is good to see that partnership possibilities are being discussed between Bangladesh and South Africa.
While formal diplomatic ties were established between the two nations almost 30 years ago, there has remained immense untapped potential for trade. It is encouraging, therefore, that the Deputy Foreign Minister of South Africa expressed interest in exploring opportunities in a meeting with our State Minister for Foreign Affairs on Friday.
Considering the similar socio-economic development goals that both countries are working towards, the trade and investment opportunities are plenty, and both nations would certainly do well to test them out.
A number of other possible areas of cooperation were identified that may be promising for both South Africa and Bangladesh, namely social development, textiles, and climate change.
Our government should bank on this renewed interest from both parties, and take immediate steps to further the cooperation process in desirable areas.
South Africa has been of great assistance to Bangladesh in the past, and there is reason to believe that whatever partnerships we explore with them will be fruitful for both nations in the long run.
There is little doubt that Bangladesh's progress so far has, to a great extent, been aided by the international relations it has maintained, and in order to achieve all that we envision for ourselves as a developing nation, we must continue to collaborate with our allies for mutual benefits.
With initial discussions already underway, our government should take these opportunities seriously and work towards establishing sustainable partnerships with South Africa.
