It is nice to see the government being so proactive about dealing with corruption cases, as in the current case against Tarique Rahman. Unfortunately, they only seem to be willing to take such initiative when it serves their political agenda – this double standard is unacceptable.
The nation has long suffered from corruption at all levels. This is an issue that needs to be dealt with quickly and effectively. But it must happen across the spectrum.
Tarique Rahman should certainly be brought to justice for any illegal activities that he may have been involved with. This also applies to any other BNP leaders who may be involved in similar activities – it is our impression that we share the AL’s passion in this.
Where we probably won’t see eye-to-eye with the government is in the fact that we adamantly believe that the same treatment should be applied to any AL leaders who are suspected of any incendiary acts.
We have seen multiple instances where the government has been less than enthusiastic, to say the very least, about pursuing corruption cases, simply because it puts them or their friends in the spotlight.
The same level of dedication with which they are pursuing Tarique, going so far as to involve Interpol, is what the nation expects the government to do in the case of the Padma bridge scandal, and in the case of the Hallmark scam.
Instead, in the two above instances, we see our relationship with the World Bank damaged, and the finance minister saying the Tk35bn involved in the Hallmark scandal is an insignificant amount.
Why does the law not apply equally to everyone?
