With Bangladesh already struggling with dealing with the coronavirus pandemic, a new and familiar threat has appeared -- that of the cyclone Amphan.
What is more concerning is that Amphan has been classified as a super cyclone, and as such, due to its sheer magnitude and scope, could absolutely devastate our coastal and char regions.
It is well documented that cyclones wreak havoc on our country every year; however, with Bangladesh already coping with a pandemic, it has never been more important to be as well prepared as we can be before this cyclone finally hits our coastal regions.
To that end, it is good to see that preparation is indeed on the way; as many as 12,780 cyclone shelters are being readied, which will be able to keep over 5 million people safe when Amphan hits.
It is extremely important for the authorities to have a proper evacuation plan so that no person is left stranded and vulnerable when the cyclone eventually hits.
However, what must also not be forgotten is that, although taking every precaution to be prepared for this cyclone is absolutely vital, what is equally integral is remembering the threat of the coronavirus; under no circumstances should these cyclone shelters become hotbeds for the virus to spread freely.
It is good that the government has recognized this issue, as more space has been made available for shelter. Now, it is up to the people, and those overlooking the operations at the shelters, to ensure that people are remaining alert about maintaining social distancing and practicing good hygiene to the best of their abilities.
The country is in a very precarious situation currently, and we can- not let this cyclone weaken us further. We must be ready for it.
