Facebook is at it again

If you can’t beat them, join them. That’s the quote most of you are familiar with. On the subject of Facebook, the statement requires a slight adjustment. They are more on the side of, “if you can’t buy them, copy them.” After their failed attempt at buying Snapchat, Facebook is throwing not-so-subtle jabs at the social media platform. The most blatant rip-off was the Instagram Story feature, which is what Snapchat basically runs on. The differences can be found in the somewhat similar filter features, and the Facebook owned Instagram lets users record videos directly for 15 seconds in each clip. And if you don’t already know, each of those clips last for only 24 hours before it disappears. Extended video length and slightly better quality wasn’t the only improvement captured by Instagram. Now, Facebook wishes to wield more power over the media. Snapchat, not too long ago, expanded their app’s Discover section that gathers different media sources into one place. Instead of pouring a heap of random media in your face, Snapchat provides a light dose of news and entertainment for when you aren’t watching other people’s stories. Think of it as Flipboard on a diet. With more additions to the company that defied the likes of Facebook, the latter seeks to suffocate the competition by copying yet another feature. According to Business Insider, Facebook is planning on introducing a similar Discover feature found in Snapchat. The new addition is reportedly called “Collections.” It’s apparently much faster than the Instant Articles that Facebook launched back in May. Snapchat’s Discover is more about throwing lifestyle tid-bits that showcase stories, photos, videos and other content form various social media partners. And Facebook isn’t copying Snapchat just for the fun it, there has to be proper advantages by attracting more users to its app. Snapchat is clocking in 10 billion video views and sees 150 million people using the app on a daily basis. Well, Snapchat, looks like Facebook will be biting at the heels for many months to come.
