The Bakehouse: Serving street-style Thai and delectable baked goods

The Bakehouse will transport you to Bangkok with authentic Thai street food and baked goods.  Their menu offers tom yum soup, chicken stir-fry, and a standout garlic cream cheese bun.

During our recent visit, we thought that while they nailed their baked items, their savoury Thai street food could use some attention to detail for long-term improvement.

"I want everyone to taste our food. We have also experimented with our cakes, and it's completely different, but we haven't marketed it yet," said co-founder Sheikh Jayed bin Noor.

While the prices for their cakes may be on the steeper side, the taste of their house-made products might just be worth it, according to Noor.

Food

We began our meal with their tom yum soup. This classic soup was well balanced and was properly seasoned. It was thick and tangy, truly hitting the spot.

However, the spice, which is a crucial element in tom yum, was lacking, leaving the otherwise flavourful broth feeling incomplete.

Next, came the seafood salad. Although the flavours were nearly balanced, the sweetness overpowered any tangy or savoury elements that typically would elevate the salad. All of the seafood was well-cooked and tender; however, the seasoning and, in turn, the flavours needed better balance for us to truly enjoy the salad.

Then we tried their Thai chicken stir fry curry with an egg and some rice. The chicken stir fry had a rich broth and was distinctly savoury. However, the curry leaned too heavily on salt, disrupting the balance in the seasoning.

The spice that a Thai curry is known for was entirely missing. While the authenticity was evident and the flavours were promising, the overall potential of the stir fry fell flat because of the imbalanced seasoning.

We also had the garlic cream cheese bun, which was delectable from start to finish. The bun itself was warm and soft to the core, baked to perfection. The rich combination of garlic and cream cheese engulfed our senses. Leaving us feeling entirely satiated, this baked bun came out a winner through and through.

We capped off our meal with an iced caramel coffee, which was well-balanced and sweet.

The price range for a meal at the bakehouse is Tk55 to Tk6,500.

Ambience

Located in Banani, The Bakehouse is dimly lit, featuring murals on the walls and dark brown furniture. The space is casual and cozy, with both indoor and outdoor seating arrangements.

Challenges

Since opening in April 2025, a major challenge for the restaurant has been service quality, as most servers are inexperienced and require time to improve their skills, according to Noor.

"Our service and management could be better. It's harder because most of my staff members are inexperienced, and they need time to learn. I haven't hired experienced servers yet because of initial budget constraints," he said.

The Bakehouse also struggles with marketing strategies and currently relies heavily on word of mouth.

"Slowly, I'm also learning what marketing strategy works with customers, and my biggest challenge is bringing customers in. We do have repeat customers, which is always a good sign," Noor added.

The price range is notably pocket-friendly, according to Noor.

"You can tell our prices are not steep," he added.

There are no collaborations with Foodpanda because of the high commission they charge, but they have partnered with Pathao and Foodi for deliveries.

"We have collaborated with both Foodi and Pathao as they were more accommodating to the bakehouse's budget constraints," he said.

Verdict

The flavours in their Thai street food are authentic, however, the attention to detail in seasoning could definitely be improved.

Their baked items, specifically their baked buns, stole the show for us. If they pay attention to detail in the seasoning for some of their dishes, The Bakehouse has undeniable potential with their baked goods and Thai street food. Definitely try their baked items, those cream cheese buns are just that good.
