BNP Vice-Chairman Khandaker Mahbub no more

BNP Vice-Chairman Advocate Khandaker Mahbub Hossain died at a hospital in Dhaka on Saturday. He was 84.

He breathed his last around 10:40pm while undergoing treatment at the Evercare Hospital, confirmed Md Shishir Manir, a junior of Khandker Mahbub Hossain.

The BNP leader was on life support since Wednesday, Sayrul Kabir khan, an official of BNP's media wing, said earlier.

Mahbub, former vice-president of the Bangladesh Bar Council and president of the Supreme Court Bar Association, was one of the lawyers of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

The BNP leader left behind his wife; two sons and a daughter and a host of admirers to mourn his death.

Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique expressed deep shock at the death of Mahbub.

Khandaker Mahbub Hossain was born on March 20, 1938. His ancestral home is in Bamna upazila of Barguna.

In 1973, he was the chief counsel of the court set up to try war criminals. He also served as president of the Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association and vice chairman of the Supreme Court Bar Association. He is known as a criminal law expert in Bangladesh.

Khandaker Mahbub joined BNP in 2008. From 2009 to 2016, he was an advisor to the BNP chairperson. In 2016, he got the post of vice-chairman.

In 2018, he was defeated by the Awami League candidate from the Barguna-2 constituency in the 11th National Parliament election.
