National Professor Jamilur Reza Choudhury has passed away after suffering from a cardiac arrest.
A former adviser to the caretaker government, Prof Jamilur died of heart attack in his Dhanmondi residence at the age of 77, on Tuesday.
The professor’s son-in law Zia Wadud confirmed the matter on his Facebook account.
President Abdul Hamid expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of the national professor.
In a condolence message, the head of the state prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family, reports BSS.
Jamilur was a renowned civil engineer and an education advocate. He was the current vice chancellor (VC) of University of Asia Pacific (UAP).
In 2001, he joined Brac University as its first VC.
Born in Sylhet, the former caretaker government adviser completed his BSc in Civil Engineering in 1963 from Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (Buet). He obtained his MSc in Civil Engineering and PhD from the University of Southampton in 1968.
He joined Buet as a lecturer in 1963 and was appointed a professor in 1976.
He was the president of Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad Committee since 2003.
In 2017, he was awarded the Ekushey Padak by the Government of Bangladesh in the category of science and technology.
Jamilur received numerous awards throughout his career.
