Coronavirus outbreak: DSEX sheds 279.32 points

The key index of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), DSEX, witnessed a massive plunge on Monday amid investors’ panic driven sales due to the fear of the coronavirus impact.

The DSEX settled at 4008.05 after losing 279.32 points or 6.51% in today’s session. Panic-stricken selloffs increased turnover slightly Tk71 crore and closed at Tk499 crore.

Market insider and expert opined that the share prices at DSE saw a steep fall due to the fear of the coronavirus impact.

Among the traded issues two gained, 352 declined and one remained unchanged during the session in Dhaka bourse.

Talking to Dhaka Tribune, market analysts said that because of coronavirus the world's capital markets slumped to record low since the 2008 global financial crisis and the world’s leading indices kept falling in recent times. 

On Sunday, the Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) confirmed that three Bangladeshis have tested positive in the country for Covid-19, a new strain of coronavirus that has killed over 3,600 people around the world.

Three others, who were in contact with the infected trio, are also in quarantine at the moment, IEDCR Director Dr Meerjady Sabrina Flora disclosed at a press briefing.

Two of the three infected recently returned from different cities in Italy. All three are aged between 20 and 35, she added.
