$66.37m BB heist money yet to be recovered

Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Tuesday informed Parliament that the government is yet to recover $66.37m of the much-talked-about Bangladesh Bank cyber heist on February 5 last year. The minister also said the government has been able to recover $34.63m so far, reports BSS.

"Around $20m, which was first sent to Sri Lanka, was returned to Federal Reserve Bank (FRB) in New York. Meanwhile, $14.63m sent to the Philippines was deposited to the Bangladesh Bank account of the FRB, New York," he said in reply to a query from Mohammad Abdullah (Lakhkhipur-4) in the house.

Muhith said all agencies, including Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU), Finance Ministry, Attorney General Office, Foreign Ministry, and Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Bangladesh Police, are jointly working to recover the stolen money sent to the Philippines. Even the Attorney General Office under the Palermo Convention has sent a Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA) request to the Department of Justice in Philippines, which is extending cooperation to recover the remainder of the stolen money, the minister added.

In addition to this, he said, different authorities in Philippines have taken legal steps against the people and organisations concerned about the theft of money from the Bangladesh Bank. "Legal steps are underway in Philippines to recover the rest of the stolen money," Muhith added.
