The government has proposed Tk1,081 crore in the 2026–27 fiscal year budget to expand monthly honorariums and festival allowances for imams, muezzins, khadems, priests and caretakers of religious institutions.
The proposal covers expansion of an existing program that currently supports 9,520 personnel in 6,438 institutions. The government plans to extend coverage gradually to all places of worship nationwide.
Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said the initiative aims to promote religious freedom, social harmony and moral values.
“We believe in unity and equality instead of religious division,” he said, adding that the government is working to implement electoral pledges, strengthen religious harmony, improve living standards of religious leaders and expand Islamic research.
He said imams, muezzins and khadems receive Tk10,000 per month, while priests and caretakers receive Tk8,000.
He also said 28.20 acres of waqf land from 11 estates have been recovered from illegal occupation. Steps are underway to make Hajj management more affordable and efficient, along with plans to expand training for imams and muezzins.
The finance minister presented the 2026–27 budget in parliament on Thursday. The budget totals Tk938,000 crore.
