We love to eat seafood for its rich flavours, fresh taste and diverse preparation styles. Be it Garlic Butter Shrimp or seafood boil, seafood is something that we all enjoy equally. 

When we think about seafood, the spotlight often falls on octopus, squid, or lobster. But the ocean offers many other exciting options worth exploring. 

Beyond popular choices like salmon or tuna, species such as barramundi, halibut, and mackerel bring unique flavours and textures. There are also a lot of options for shellfish and other exotic choices. 

Today’s pick is four of those most exciting seafoods. 

Scallop 

Scallop, a type of bivalve, is a premium seafood delicacy. The adductor muscle is the edible part of the scallop, which has a slightly sweet, buttery flavour and a soft, meaty texture. Their tender, meaty texture pairs well with garlic, butter, and lemon, creating simple yet elegant dishes. Scallops can be grilled, pan-seared or can be made into ceviche or salad. 

Scallops are very easy to cook. They are also highly nutritious, offering high-quality protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and essential vitamins like B12.

Sea urchin 

Sea urchin, also called uni in Japanese, is a delicacy in many cuisines, especially in Japan. Known for its distinctive spiny shell, sea urchin has marvellous flavour to offer. The edible part of a sea urchin is the soft inner portion, coloured bright yellow or orange and has a creamy texture. 

The taste of the sea urchin is a unique combination of briny, sweet, and creamy flavours. Sea urchins are typically served raw. Various preparations like pasta, risotto, and uni on toast are also quite popular. 

Oysters  

Oysters are a type of shellfish popular for their unique flavour profile. People from all over the world love to eat oysters, especially in the coastal regions.

Geoduck 

Geoduck is considered to be the largest burrowing clam in the world and is famous for its long and protruding siphon. Just like other cams, it has a briny and ocean-like flavour. 

The flesh of a geoduck is firm and slightly crunchy, with a slightly chewy texture. Geoduck is often served raw, thinly sliced with sushi or sashimi. 

People also love to eat ceviche or salads made with thinly sliced geoduck. Other cooked versions of geoduck are quite popular as well.
