How the Nissan GT-R earned its 'Godzilla' title

The legendary Nissan GT-R, often referred to as "Godzilla," commands attention and admiration within the automotive industry. With an unparalleled legacy spanning six generations, the Skyline GT-R not only stands as a motoring icon but also serves as a testament to Nissan's engineering prowess, proudly bearing the flagship label.

In the realm of high-performance automobiles, the narrative extends beyond mere speed; it encompasses winning races and etching a name in the annals of racing history. Nissan GT-R takes a unique approach to its racing heritage, setting itself apart from the likes of Ferrari, which is renowned for utilizing road car sales to fund its racing endeavors.

The story goes back in the late '80s with the launch of the third-generation GT-R, aptly named the R32. This model was specifically designed to compete in the Group A and Japanese Touring Car championships. The R32 not only excelled on the track but also dominated the competition, laying the foundation for its iconic moniker.

The '90s marked an era of sheer dominance for Nissan. Leveraging the FIA's homologation rules to their advantage, the R32 Skyline GT-R secured numerous titles. This powerhouse vehicle clinched three consecutive Australian Touring Car Championships from 1990 to 1992 and asserted its supremacy in the Japanese Touring Car Championship, securing four titles, two each with Impul and Hasemi. The R32's triumph extended to endurance racing at the Bathurst 1000, where Nissan Motorsport Australia's car emerged victorious in multiple races.

According to Nissan, it was the Australian media that coined the term "Godzilla" for the R32 GT-R. The esteemed motoring magazine "Wheels" is credited with popularizing this now-legendary nickname. The clever wordplay and reference implied that, akin to the formidable Japanese monster Godzilla, the R32 GT-R had become the "King of the Monsters" following its motorsport dominance in the early 1990s.

This period saw the GT-R triumph over established models like the E30 BMW M3 Evolution and others, unleashing a series of victorious streaks that solidified its mythical status.

Nissan GT-R's journey from a homologation model to a racing behemoth not only redefined the brand's racing legacy but also earned it the fitting title of "Godzilla" — a symbol of raw power, dominance, and an indomitable spirit on the racing circuit.
