BYD is making their electric car debut in Bangladesh

In an astounding move, global electric vehicle (EV) giant BYD, headquartered in Shenzhen, is preparing to launch its first car in Bangladesh by March next year, signaling a major shift in the country's automotive landscape.

The debut will showcase the BYD Seal, a premium electric sedan set to compete in the upscale segment, equipped with a rapid 40-minute full charge capability using a fast charger and a range of up to 540 kilometers.

Operated by CG-Runner Bangladesh, a collaboration between Nepal's Chowdhury Group and local pioneer Runner Group, details surrounding the EV venture remain confidential.

Confirmation of the BYD distributorship agreement and the completion of recruitment for the Bangladeshi operation have emerged from insider sources and various media sources, with active training underway in anticipation of the impending launch.

The iconic Haque Building in Dhaka's Tejgaon, previously home to Runner's flagship showroom, is undergoing a significant transformation to house BYD's inaugural showroom, complemented by an advanced service center nearby. BYD's strategic entry plan involves launching with the BYD Seal and gradually introducing more affordable models to align with mass-market demands.

Globally, BYD has emerged as a formidable competitor to industry leader Tesla, with third-quarter battery electric vehicle sales matching Tesla's and capturing 17% of the global BEV market, according to Counterpoint Research. Analysts predict BYD's potential surpassing of Tesla in the fourth quarter, solidifying its status as the global EV leader.

In Bangladesh, the slow adoption of EVs due to delayed policy-making is undergoing transformation with the Electric Motor Vehicle Registration and Operation Guideline 2023. The guideline aims to achieve a 30% electric vehicle market share by 2030, supported by favorable taxation and tariffs. Despite being in the early stages, the EV market is gaining momentum, with BYD's entry marking a significant milestone. Local players, including startups like Palki Motors and Bangladesh Auto Industries, are also gearing up to contribute to the country's EV evolution.
