WhatsApp introduces Instagram-like reply bar for status updates

In its continuous evolution from a simple messaging platform to a multifaceted social media giant, WhatsApp, now under the ownership of Meta, has unveiled yet another feature aimed at enhancing user interaction. The messaging app has reportedly introduced a reply bar for status updates, reminiscent of a feature found on Meta's Instagram Stories.

According to reports from WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, the new feature has been rolled out to beta testers on both Android and iOS platforms. The reply bar, situated at the bottom of status updates, streamlines the process of responding to posts by eliminating the need to swipe up, a method currently employed by WhatsApp users to reply using text messages or emojis.

The dedicated reply bar is expected to provide a more direct and user-friendly approach to engaging with status updates. Beta testers have begun to experience the feature with the WhatsApp beta for iOS 23.15.10.72 update via the TestFlight app and the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.26.3 update through the Google Play Store. The broader release to all users is anticipated in the coming days.

Accompanying the report is a screenshot showcasing the reply bar feature in action, exhibiting its striking similarity to the equivalent feature found in Instagram Stories. This move further aligns WhatsApp with Meta's overarching vision of creating a unified social media experience across its platforms.

Recent developments suggest that WhatsApp is exploring integrations with other Meta-owned platforms. Earlier this month, the platform was observed testing a feature that enables users to share their WhatsApp statuses directly to Instagram. Additionally, a forthcoming feature is expected to allow users to search for contacts within the app using usernames, mitigating the necessity to share phone numbers for communication—a privacy-oriented functionality reminiscent of Telegram.

As WhatsApp continues to blur the lines between messaging and social media, users can anticipate a more seamless and interconnected experience across the Meta ecosystem.
