The chief minister of Tripura has expressed his hope that a bridge linking the neighbouring Indian state with Chittagong sea port will bring massive economic benefits to the people of the region.
Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina jointly laid the foundation stone of the River Feni bridge with Indian PM Narendra Modi in 2015.
The 150-metre structure will connect Sabroom, the southernmost sub-division of Tripura, with Ramgarh in Bangladesh when it is completed next year.
“If the bridge on the River Feni is established, Sabroom will emerge as a gateway to the entire North East and this would reduce prices of commodities by 25%,” Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb said at the ongoing North East Council (NEC) Plenary meeting in Shillong, Meghalaya, on Tuesday.
The government in January cleared all of the issues standing in the way of the construction of the bridge.
