FFWC: Flood situation may worsen in Sylhet, Sunamganj

The flood situation in parts of Sylhet and Sunamganj may deteriorate further over the next two days as water continues to flow above the danger level at four monitoring stations on the Surma, Kushiyara and Someswari rivers, according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC).

The warning was issued in the FFWC's latest rainfall and river situation bulletin, signed by Assistant Engineer Md Mahmudul Islam Shovon on Monday.

According to the forecast, water is flowing above the danger level at Chatak in Sunamganj on the Surma River, Markuli in Sunamganj and Fenchuganj in Sylhet on the Kushiyara River, and Kalmakanda in Netrokona on the Someswari River.

The FFWC said heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over the next 24 hours in the Sylhet, Mymensingh and Rangpur divisions, as well as in the Indian states of Assam, Meghalaya and West Bengal.

Water levels in the Surma-Kushiyara river system have risen over the past 24 hours and are expected to continue increasing for the next two days before stabilizing on the third day. As a result, flooding in low-lying areas along the rivers in Sylhet and Sunamganj may worsen slightly.

The bulletin also said water levels in the Jadukata and Bhugai-Kangsha rivers have increased, while the Someswari River has remained stable and the Sarigowain River has receded.

Over the next 24 to 48 hours, water levels in the Sarigowain, Jadukata, Someswari and Bhugai-Kangsha rivers in Sylhet, Sunamganj, Netrokona, Sherpur and Mymensingh districts may rise further and exceed the danger level at some locations, potentially triggering short-term flooding in adjacent low-lying areas.

In Rangpur division, water levels in the Teesta River have increased, while the Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers remain stable.

The FFWC said that over the next 24 to 48 hours, the Teesta and Dudhkumar rivers in Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Rangpur and Kurigram may cross the danger level at some points, causing short-term flooding. During the same period, the Teesta in Gaibandha and the Dharla in Kurigram may flow at the warning level, temporarily inundating nearby low-lying areas.

Elsewhere, water levels in the Tangon, Punarbhaba, Ghaghat, Atrai, Upper Atrai, Mahananda, Jamuneswari and Karatoa rivers in the Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions have also increased, although the Upper Karatoa has receded. Water levels in these rivers are expected to continue rising over the next three days.

Meanwhile, water levels in several rivers, including the Sangu and Matamuhuri, in Bandarban, Chittagong and Cox's Bazar districts are likely to decline over the next 24 hours, allowing flood conditions in low-lying areas to continue improving, the FFWC said.
