One killed in clash between robber gangs in Rohingya camp

A man was shot dead during a clash between rival robber gangs operating inside a Rohingya refugee camp in Hnila union of Teknaf upazila, Cox’s Bazar, early Wednesday.

The deceased, known locally as “Raikshya,” was identified as Abdur Rahim, 40, son of Habibur Rahman of Mochni village in Hnila. Locals said he was a member of the Salman Shah group, an armed gang active in the camp area.

His bullet-riddled body was recovered from the Bikas Mor area of the Nayapara Rohingya refugee camp in the early hours of the day.

Local Rohingya residents said they noticed the body while heading out for Fajr prayers and informed the authorities. A team from the Armed Police Battalion (APBn) and Teknaf Model Police Station later reached the spot, recovered the body and confirmed the identity.

According to locals, Abdur Rahim was considered a key member of the Salman Shah dacoit group, which has long been active in criminal activities inside the camp.

Confirming the incident, Teknaf Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Saiful Islam said police initially believed the killing was the result of an internal dispute among members of rival robber gangs.

“The body has been recovered and the incident is being investigated. Necessary legal steps are being taken,” he added.

The killing has triggered fresh panic among camp residents. Authorities said security measures have been strengthened in the area to maintain law and order.
