South Korea has revealed its plan to provide $10 million in 2024 in humanitarian aid for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.
The annual funding had more than tripled compared to the previous year’s funding, the South Korean embassy in Dhaka said on Tuesday.
This year's humanitarian assistance will be provided through international organizations in Bangladesh such as the UN refugee agency UNHCR, the International Organization for Migration, the World Food Programme and the United Nations Population Fund.
Since 2017, Korea has continued to provide $3 to 5 million annually to help Rohingyas and their host communities in Bangladesh in close cooperation with the Bangladesh government and international organizations.
In addition, the first rice donation of 15,000 tons, sufficient for 1 million Rohingyas for 1.5 months has been made, which further increases this year’s total amount of humanitarian assistance.
Korea's funding has been used for various humanitarian activities over the last seven years, including the provision of LPG, education and food in support of the Joint Response Plan (JRP).
“This year, funding for empowering Rohingya women and youth through UNFPA has been newly added to our support for humanitarian activities,” the embassy said.
It hopes this funding from Korea will contribute to the implementation of the Joint Response Plan 2024 and the provision of essential humanitarian assistance for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.
