BLAST: Provide legal services to the Rohingya

Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST) has demanded the government to provide legal services to the Rohingya community for their personal matters and also open a hotline number for them in this regard.

BLAST made the demand through a press release issued on Wednesday.

It has been three years since the Rohingya people were forced to leave their motherland and came to Bangladesh. Around 855,000 Rohingyas live at various refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar. The Rohnigya need various types of legal services for issues including, divorce, marriage, birth, and death.

As there is limited access to legal services, family disputes and violence have increased among the Rohingya people who are living in the refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar. The most affected are women and children.

Also, these disputes have further increased amid the Covid-19 pandemic, according to news published on various media outlets.

BLAST praised the government’s decision to reinstate the mobile internet connection in the Rohingya camp areas. However, at the same time, they said it is very important to provide immediate legal support to the Rohingya women and children who have been victims of domestic violence.

Opening a hotline number would ensure security for women and children living inside the camps.
