A fault in the Meghnaghat-Haripur national grid line disrupted electricity supply to the Secretariat, several areas of Dhaka and parts of Chittagong on Tuesday.
The outage occurred at 12:43pm, leaving several areas of the capital without electricity.
Power Grid Bangladesh said the disruption affected areas including Bhulta, Haripur, Siddhirganj, Gulshan, Rampura, Ullon and Motijheel. Parts of Chittagong also experienced power cuts.
An official responsible for electricity at the Public Works Ministry in the Secretariat said the Dhaka Power Distribution Company Limited (DPDC) had informed him that the outage was caused by a grid failure.
Power Grid Bangladesh said the technical cause of the outage was yet to be determined. Restoration work was underway, with engineers reconnecting affected areas in phases. The national grid system is under the supervision of the National Load Despatch Centre (NLDC).
In an emergency press release, the Power Division said efforts were underway to restore electricity supply. Power was gradually returning to affected areas, with full restoration expected shortly.
Power Grid Bangladesh later announced that restoration of the national grid had been completed at 2:30pm, with all grid lines and substations operational.
The agency said electricity supply remained normal in the northern parts of the country and other unaffected areas.
Several areas of the capital, including the Secretariat and its surroundings, Moghbazar, Modhubagh, Shantinagar, Malibagh and Khilgaon, were reported to be without electricity.
In an emergency press release issued on Tuesday, the Power Division said a technical fault had disrupted electricity supply to parts of Dhaka and Chitttagong, adding that urgent efforts were underway to restore power.
Power plants were being brought back online in phases, and scattered load-shedding was expected to ease as electricity generation increased, the agency said.
It apologised for the temporary inconvenience caused by the unexpected power disruption.
