National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener and Opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam has said gas and electricity shortages, along with corruption, have persisted since Sheikh Hasina’s tenure.
“These problems still exist, and the opposition will remain on the streets until the country’s gas, power and law-and-order situation returns to normal,” he said.
Nahid made the remarks at view- exchange meeting with locals at Satarkul School and College in his Dhaka-11 constituency on Friday afternoon. Earlier, he visited several neighbourhoods in the area.
He said the ongoing crises could have been addressed more effectively if the government had taken appropriate initiatives over the past seven months.
Referring to the last election, Nahid said voters in Satarkul had rejected extortionists and would not elect them in the future either.
He also alleged that opposition lawmakers do not receive development allocations on par with those from the ruling party, making it difficult to plan development projects for their constituencies.
“Development allocations should be distributed equally between the government and opposition parties,” he said.
