Bangladesh and Algeria have discussed expanding bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, particularly through potential agreements for the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Bangladesh.
Algerian Minister of State and Minister of Hydrocarbons Mohamed Arkab held a videoconference with Bangladesh’s Minister of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Iqbal Hassan Mahmood on Thursday, according to Algeria’s Ministry of Hydrocarbons.
The meeting was attended by Sonatrach Group President and CEO Noureddine Daoudi, Bangladesh’s ambassador to Algeria, and the chief executives of Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Resources Corporation (Petrobangla), Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) and Rupantarita Prakritik Gas Company Limited (RPGCL), along with officials from both sides.
The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in hydrocarbons and other areas of mutual interest, the Algerian ministry said.
A key focus was the possibility of establishing mechanisms and arrangements for supplying LNG from Algeria to Bangladesh.
The Bangladeshi side expressed interest in signing LNG purchase and supply agreements with Algeria, citing Sonatrach’s position as a reliable strategic supplier in the global gas market.
The two sides also discussed potential partnerships between Sonatrach and Bangladeshi energy companies to help meet Bangladesh’s growing energy demand and ensure supplies of LNG, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and other petroleum products.
They also explored cooperation in developing infrastructure for LNG and other petroleum products.
At the end of the meeting, the two ministers reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the areas discussed and working towards concrete agreements.
The countries also agreed to form a Joint Working Group to follow up on the discussions and facilitate closer economic and energy cooperation between Bangladesh and Algeria.
