Excelerate Energy’s floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Maheshkhali stopped supplying gas around 2:40pm on Wednesday after its LNG stock ran out, with supply currently being maintained from Summit’s terminal.
According to Petrobangla data, total gas supply in the country stood at 2,289 million cubic feet at 12pm on Wednesday. Of this, 1,628 million cubic feet came from domestic wells and 661 million cubic feet from LNG.
However, LNG supply fell to 562 million cubic feet around 6pm, while domestic gas supply stood at around 1,627 million cubic feet. As a result, total gas flow through the national transmission network fell to 2,189 million cubic feet.
An official of the Rupantarita Prakritik Gas Company Limited (RPGCL) said the last remaining LNG stock at Excelerate’s terminal ran out around 2:40pm on Wednesday.
Gas supply from the terminal has remained suspended since then, while Summit’s LNG terminal continues to supply gas to the national grid.
Officials concerned said the main reason for the shutdown was a shortage of LNG cargoes.
Earlier, confusion had emerged over repairs to the terminal’s boiler. Excelerate had initially said it would take 72 hours to restart the boiler.
Although the boiler was later reported to have become operational, there was not enough LNG stock to keep the terminal running. As a result, gas supply could not be resumed despite the boiler becoming operational.
