Opposition leader and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has urged the acting president to convene a special session of parliament to address the country’s severe power and energy crisis and worsening socio-economic and law-and-order situation.
He sent a letter to the acting president on Friday, with copies also sent to the prime minister and the parliament secretariat.
The letter said rampant load-shedding had disrupted daily life and severely affected industrial production, businesses and trade.
It also attributed rising prices of essential commodities and the deterioration of the overall law-and-order situation to the power and energy crisis, saying the situation was pushing people into growing uncertainty.
“As elected representatives of the people, we cannot remain silent during this crisis. Meaningful discussion in parliament and urgent solutions are essential,” Shafiqur Rahman said.
He urged the president to immediately convene a special parliamentary session to find swift solutions to the nationwide power and energy crisis and related problems.
