The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) on Wednesday announced higher electricity prices at both wholesale and retail levels, increasing tariffs for consumers and various user categories across the country.
The new tariff structure raises wholesale prices by 19.85% and retail prices by an average of 16.68%.
The announcement was made at a press briefing at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) in Ramna.
BERC said the revised rates came into effect from Monday.
Under the new structure, lifeline consumers using up to 50 units will pay Tk 5.32 per unit, up from Tk 4.63, an increase of Tk 0.69.
For consumers using 0–75 units, the rate has gone up to Tk 6.18 from Tk 5.26, an increase of Tk 0.92. For 76–200 units, the tariff rises to Tk 8.50 from Tk 7.20.
For 201–300 units, the price increases to Tk 9.10 from Tk 7.59, while for 301–400 units it rises to Tk 9.62 from Tk 8.02.
For 401–600 units, the tariff has been raised to Tk 15.01 from Tk 12.67. Consumption above 600 units will now cost Tk 17.35 per unit, up from Tk 14.61.
For other categories, agricultural irrigation tariff rises to Tk 6.04 from Tk 5.25, while educational, religious, hospital and charitable institutions will now pay Tk 9.05, up from Tk 7.55.
Street lights and water pumps will be charged Tk 11.46, up from Tk 9.71, and small industries Tk 12.73, up from Tk 11.76.
The construction sector tariff has been raised to Tk 18.09 from Tk 15.15. Electric vehicle charging and battery charging stations will now pay Tk 11.36, up from Tk 9.62.
Commercial and office users will pay Tk 15.36 per unit, up from Tk 13.01.
