Legal notice seeks cancellation of all electricity agreements with Adani

A legal notice has been sent to the authorities concerned demanding the cancellation of all electricity agreements with India’s Adani Group.

Barrister M Kaiyum sent this letter via post on Wednesday, requesting an “immediate reconsideration or complete cancellation of the unjust, one-sided agreements.”

The notice says if reconsideration of the agreements is not initiated within three days, a writ petition will be filed in the High Court.

It also calls for the formation of a review committee comprising energy and legal experts to deliver a detailed report.

The chairman of the Bangladesh Power Development Board and the secretary of the energy ministry have been given three days to respond to the notice.

Under the Power Division's instructions, an expedited agreement for power purchase was signed with Adani in 2017.

At that time, no coal-based power plants were operational in Bangladesh.

One of these agreements is a 25-year power purchase agreement made with Adani in 2017.

Electricity is primarily being supplied to Bangladesh from Adani’s 1,600MW power plant in Jharkhand, an eastern Indian state.

At a national review committee meeting on September 28, it was decided to collect data related to 11 power plants.

The Power Division has been directed to provide these data and documents to the committee, including details on Adani’s power plant in India.
