Tripura ready to supply power to Bangladesh

Tripura, currently a power-surplus state, will now be able to supply additional power to Bangladesh and earn extra revenue in the process. According to Tripura’s Power Minister Manik Dey, power was being supplied to Bangladesh on an experimental basis since last week and since engineers had now completed tests on transmission lines, Tripura was ready to supply an additional 60 MW power. “Formal power supply is likely to start during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s India visit commencing on Friday,” said Dey, adding: “Though Bangladesh has sought an additional 100 MW power from India to resolve its power crisis in its eastern part, as per their existing technical feasibility, they will take 60 MW electricity.” A 47-km double circuit transmission line was erected to link the power grid at Surjyamaninagar in western Tripura to the Comilla power grid in eastern Bangladesh. On March 23, 2016, Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Sheikh Hasina, along with Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, officially signed the agreement for supplying 100 MW power to Bangladesh.
