Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina unveiled the foundation plaque of the 1,200MW Matarbari coal-fired power plant in Moheshkhali, Cox's Bazar on Sunday.
The power plant on 607 hectares of land at Moheshkhali in Cox's Bazar will be commissioned in 2024. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) is financing the plant.

Focus BanglaSpeaking on the occasion, the premier said the power generation capacity of Bangladesh had been increased from only 3,200MW in 2009 to 1,600MW, which is a big achievement for the nation.
Coming to power in 1996, she said, the Awami League government opened up the power generation for the private sector to meet the growing demand of electricity.
