BNP wants no drama with army deployment

The BNP on Friday blamed the Election Commission (EC) for serving the purpose of the government.

The way the EC wants to deploy army has frustrated the BNP, said Moudud Ahmed, standing committee member of the party.

The EC on Tuesday said the army would be deployed for four days as a striking force and act on the request of the returning officers.

A letter was sent to the Armed Forces Division the same night to this end.

But the very next day they sent a revised letter saying the army would stay in the cantonment and act on the request of the returning officers.

“We believe that the change in the decision over army deployment clearly shows that the EC is working at the will of the government,” Moudud Ahmed said.

The BNP leader came up with the allegation while he was campaigning for Mirza Abbas in Topkhana Road in the capital.

Another BNP standing committee member Mahbubur Rahman said: “We do not want to see any drama. We want to see army visible on the election day.”

Addressing a human chain at the National Press Club the former army chief said the opposition wants a strong EC.

Meanwhile, at a press briefing at party’s Nayapaltan headquarters, Hannan Shah claimed that 99% polling stations are vulnerable.

The ruling party is attacking BNP men and tearing our posters, he alleged.

“Police are arresting our candidates and interfering in the electioneering,” Hannan Shah said in a tone of frustration.
