Sahasra Nagorik Committee, a newly formed pro-Awami League citizens’ platform, has begun campaigns for AL-backed mayoral candidates for the Dhaka North and South City Corporations polls scheduled be held on April 28.
On the occasion, the committee held a press conference at its election office in the capital’s Shahbagh area yesterday.
With its convener eminent writer Syed Shamsul Haq in the chair, Committee Member Secretary Golam Quddus, Nasiruddin Yusuf, Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists President Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul, Dhaka University Blue Panel Convener Prof Nazma Shahin, Poet Russell Asheki, Firoz Hossain, poet Hanif Khan and Engineer Manju, among others, were present at the programme.
The committee will seek votes for both Annisul Haq and Sayeed Khokon through various programmes and activities.
As a part of the campaign, the committee will hold a rally at the auditorium of Engineers Institution in the capital tomorrow, seeking votes for Sayeed Khokon, the mayoral candidate for Dhaka South City Corporation.
On April 22, it will hold another gathering in front of Sony Cinema Hall at Mirpur-2 Intersection seeking votes for Annisul Haq, another AL-backed candidate for Dhaka North City Corporation.
Members of the committee which is consist of diverse professionals including freedom fighters, teachers, poets, literatures, cultural activists and journalists will attend the rallies.
On April 24, the committee members will release 100 pigeons at the Central Shaheed Minar declaring Dhaka a “city of peace”.
Earlier on April 15, in a meeting of Awami League Central Working Committee chaired by the party chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina finalized the party’s strategies for the elections, including formation of the committee.
As a part of the polls strategy, the AL will also launch campaigning programmes in parallel to the progammes of Khaleda Zia for her party-backed candidates.
Yesterday, Khaleda started her campaign at Gulshan-1 in the capital.
Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed told the Dhaka Tribune that his party will observe campaigns by Khaleda Zia and give its official reaction about her moves.
