7 hurt in misfire at Kazi Zafarullah's rally

Seven people, including a police official, have received splinter injuries by a shot reportedly fired from the shotgun of an Awami League leader during a street rally of party's presidium member Kazi Zafarullah.

Witnesses said the shotgun of AL upazila unit Vice-President Depok Majumder went off mistakenly while he was attending the rally at Padaron village under Bhanga upazila of Faridpur around 9am Saturday, leaving seven people, including the OC of Bhanga police station, injured.

The police official, Nazmul Islam, received minor injuries and joined his work after primary treatment while six others were sent to Faridpur Medical College Hospital, said Kazi Hedayet Ullah Sakline, the upazila unit president of the ruling party.

Quoting witnesses and party fellows, he told the Dhaka Tribune: “I was not present at the rally. But, came to know about the incident from my party fellow. The trigger of the gun pressed mistakenly.”

However, former UP chairman Rawshan Kabir claimed that the AL leader fired the gun shot in order to settle an altercation between his supporters and the villagers.

He said: “The supporters of Kazi Zafarullah locked in an altercation with the villagers while the former lawmaker was returning to his rally venue after laying the foundation of a local bridge. At one stage, Depok fired the gun shot in order to bring the situation under control.”
