Exchange of views with candidates starts April 11

The Election Commission plans to hold view exchange programmes from April 11 with the candidates and other stakeholders of the city corporation polls in Dhaka and Chittagong, Election Commissioner Md Shah Nawaz has said.

In Chittagong the discussions would be held on April 11, while for Dhaka North and Dhaka South City Corporations views would be exchanged on April 12 and April 13 respectively, the commissioner told journalists at the EC office in the capital’s Agargaon yesterday.

He reiterated that all mayoral and councillor candidates must abide by the electoral code of conduct during their campaigns.

The returning officers have already been authorised to take necessary action against the candidates violating the code of conduct while magistrates would also assist them in carrying out their duties, Shah Nawaz said.

The Election Commission would provide all legal assistance necessary, he added. “Already several actions have been taken against some candidates for violating the electoral code of conduct. So, everything is going on peacefully.”

Although the candidates officially started canvassing yesterday, their individual campaigns are expected to pick up pace after electoral symbols are allocated on April 10.

April 9 would be the last date for aspirants to withdraw their candidature for the city polls in Dhaka and Chittagong, which are scheduled to take place on April 28.
