The BNP-led 20-party alliance has extend its support to outgoing mayor of Chittagong City Corporation M Manjur Alam in the upcoming elections.
The decision came from a meeting of the alliance held at the residence of its coordinator, also BNP Chittagong city unit President, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, around 4pm Saturday.
The former commerce minister told the Dhaka Tribune: “We have decided to extend our support to M Manjur Alam in the upcoming city corporation polls.”
Earlier on Friday, Manjur resigned from his post and collected nomination form for contesting the mayoral race of the city.
Divisional Election Commissioner Abdul Baten told the Dhaka Tribune that Manjur picked up nomination paper from district election office around 3:30pm.
In a press briefing after collecting nomination form, Manjur Alam said he would contest the poll under the banner Chattagram Unnayan Andolon, an organisation of pro-BNP professionals.
Earlier, Manjur Alam handed over his resignation letter to panel mayor Mohammad Hossain during a meeting at the City Corporation Building in the afternoon.
Mohammad Hossain has taken the charge as acting mayor of the city.
The Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) polls is set to be held on April 28.
According to Election Commission rules, the deadline to submit nomination forms is March 29. Scrutiny of nominations will take place on April 1 and 2.
The deadline to withdraw nominations is April 9.
