The BNP-led 20-party alliance yesterday asked its leaders and activists to “peacefully” observe a countrywide 72-hour general strike from this morning since the government had not accepted the demand of holding a fresh election under a non-partisan interim government.
The alliance has also announced to bring out mass processions tomorrow in every municipality, upazila, district headquarters and every ward of the city, demanding an end to the repression of the opposition leaders and activists.
Salahuddin Ahmed, joint secretary general of the party, made the announcement through a press release on behalf of alliance leader Khaleda Zia.
The new phase of shutdown will continue amid the countrywide transport blockade that has been in force since January 6.
Accused in violence-related cases, Salahuddin, now a fugitive, alleged the country had been losing its image as a political state and people were afraid of the state.
