Hasina tells Annisul, Khokon to prepare for DCC polls

The ruling Awami League has finalised the nomination of former FBCCI president Annisul Huq and Sayeed Khokon as its candidates for the split Dhaka City Corporation polls.

Annisul, also a noted media personality, will run for the Dhaka North City Corporation and Syeed Khokon, son of former Dhaka mayor Mohammad Hanif, will run for the Dhaka South City Corporation polls.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also the chief of the ruling party, asked Khokon and Annisul to make the necessary preparations for the elections, said sources at the PM’s official residence Ganabhaban last night.

The split DCC elections have been overdue since May 2007. Before the city corporation was split in 2011, the last election was held in April 2002.

In a recent cabinet meeting at the secretariat, the prime minister directed the LGRD ministry to take necessary measures for clearing the obstacles in arranging elections for the bifurcated city corporation as soon as possible.

On February 6, at a meeting of the Awami League Central Working Committee held at the Ganabhaban, Hasina said the city corporation elections will be held in March.

On November 29, 2011, the government split the city corporation into two, and appointed administrators to run them.
