CU BCL faction: 72-hour ultimatum over five-point demand

Activists of Varsity Express (VX), a shuttle train-based Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) faction of the Chittagong University BCL unit yesterday put a 72-hour ultimatum to CU authorities to ensure their place over all official residents at Shahjalal dormitory on campus.

The BCL also demanded the immediate transfer of Hathazari police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Ismail Hossain for his alleged partisan role and negligence toward discharging his duty during the factional clash.

“VX members will go to campus and take their position at Shahjalal dormitory at any cost after the deadline, if CU authorities fail to meet our demands, and CU will be held responsible for any further untoward incidents,” said Shahriar Tamin, a VX member at a press conference at Chittagong Press Club at around 3pm, under the banner “We Want to Read.”

In their speech, VX members alleged that police administration had failed to show their neutrality, as Choose Friend with Care (CFC), another shuttle train-based BCL faction, had carried arms right in front of them last Sunday, while the OC arrested the innocent VX members from Shahjalal dormitory, said Tanim, a fourth-year student of the Law department.

“First, we are CU students, and second, we are BCL members, who have the right to stay at the dormitory and carry out our academic activities, while the administration has to ensure a fair environment for the 400 VX members,” added Tanim.

The other demands are to hand over the Taposh murder case to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for a fair investigation, and bring the culprits to book, to take exemplary punishment against the CFC men who assaulted the teachers, and to arrest CFC leader Sumon Mamun, Amit Kumar Bashu and Rakib for attacking VX members at Shahjalal dormitory on September 27, 2014.

Tanvir of the History department, Riajuddin Asif of the Sociology department, Mohaiminul Haque Faisal and Raihanul Kader Chowdhury of the Management department, Akash Mitra, and Mizanur Rahman Mizan of the Marketing department were present at the press conference.
