‘Instigator’ Rizvi remanded

A Dhaka court yesterday granted police three days to interrogate BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed in an arson case.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Alamgir Kabir Raj passed the order after Sub-Inspector Md Mosharraf Hossain of Badda police, also investigation officer of the case, produced Rizvi before it seeking 10 days’ remand.

The case was filed for torching a bus during the BNP-led 20-party blockade on January 26.

In the remand prayer, the IO mentioned that the accused BNP leader had created anarchy in the country through his provocative speech.

On the other hand, defence counsel Md Sanaullah Miah opposed the remand prayer and sought bail for his client.

According to the case, on January 26, miscreants set a bus of “Anabil Paribahan” alight near RFL Group head office on Badda Link Road in the capital. Md Jamir Uddin, supervisor of Anabil Paribahan, filed the case against 28 identified and 20-25 unidentified people. The complainant also said BNP central leaders had provoked Rizvi to burn the vehicles during the agitation programmes.

Rizvi, who had been hiding since the BNP alliance began the indefinite blockade, was arrested at a house in Baridhara area by the Rapid Action Battalion early Saturday.

He was later handed over to Badda police and taken to the DB headquarters.
