Ctg AL activist burnt to death

An Awami League activist was burnt to death while two others were injured in separate attacks by unidentified miscreants at Mirsarai upazila in Chittagong yesterday.

The deceased was identified as Mohiuddin, 40, resident of Hayit Kandi union of the upazila and a local Awami League activist, said Imtiaj Bhuiyan, OC at Mirsarai police station.

The injured, Mostafizur Rahman, 27, and Harun, 45, were admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

Mostafiz’s father Md Shahjahan is the AL president of ward 8 of Mirsarai.

The OC said a group of 10-12 unidentified miscreants stormed into Mohiuddin’s house around 12:30pm and started to hack him and Harun with sharp weapons injuring the duo critically.

Later, the miscreants set the house on fire by pouring petrol, and Mohiuddin was burnt to death, the OC said.

When informed, fire fighters from Sitakunda fire station went to the scene and doused the flame within two and half hours, said sources from the regional Fire Service and Civil Defense Headquarters in Agrabad.

Meanwhile, Mostafiz was critically injured when a group of masked miscreants attacked him at his house at Baliyadi village of the same upazila.

Md Shahjahan, Mostafiz’s father, said a group of miscreants entered their house breaking the door open around 12:30pm.

“My house is located around 500m away from Mohiuddin’s residence. I heard a few gunshots and went to see what happened. During the commotion, miscreants swooped my house and hacked my son as they could not get their hands on me,“ he said.

The AL leader claimed activists of Jamaat-Shibir carried out the attacks and killed Mohiuddin.

OC Imtiaj said police had yet to ascertain the motive behind the murder. Police is looking into the matter, and legislative measures are being taken.
