PM: Govt firm to ensure people's safety

The government will take all possible measures to hinder activities that pose threat to the security of countrymen, said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

She said: “The government is determined to ensure the safety of countrymen and nobody will be allowed to hinder the security of people."

The premier made the statement while addressing a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital on Monday afternoon, marking Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s homecoming day on January 10.

Mentioning that Khaleda Zia is repentant over her decision of boycotting the national polls, the premier further said: “The BNP chairperson has made a big mistake by not participating in the January 5 polls. She is creating anarchy in the country as she understood her fault and repentant for her political mistake.”

“But, the government will never let Khaleda and her party men to create unrest in the country. It will be handled strictly.”

She urged the people of the country to find out those, who were involved in making bombs.

“Find out the miscreants and hand them over to the police.”

Echoing her previous statements over Khaleda Zia's confinement, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina again claimed that the BNP chief was not confined to her Gulshan party office.

Hasina said: “The BNP chairperson is not confined to her party office. She is staying there willingly. She is free to decide whether she will leave the office.”

“She [Khaleda] can leave her office whenever she wishes.”

Hasina alleged that BNP does not believe in the independence of Bangladesh.

“So, they are creating anarchy in the name of blockades and hartals in order to hinder the development of the country. But, people do not support them.”

The rally began at 2:30pm on Monday with the presence of thousands of leaders and activists of ruling Awami League and its associate organisations.

Earlier in the day, the ruling Awami League had obtained a conditional permission from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) to hold the gathering.

The decision comes within a week of the police banning rallies and processions in Dhaka as the BNP and Awami League were set to hold major events on Jan 5 marking one year of the national election.
