The activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir were active on roads in Rajshahi city on the second consecutive day of the identified blockade enforced by the BNP-led 20-party alliance, but the presence of BNP men were less on the day.
On the day, no major incidents took place in the city while Shibir activists tried to destabilise the situation in several areas.
A group of Shibir activists tried to bring out a procession from Hadir intersection in the city around 10am.
On receiving information, law enforcers rushed to the spot and disperse the Shibir men from the scene. Police, however, could not arrest anyone from there.
Ifte Khayer Alam, assistant police commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP), and also its spokesperson told the Dhaka Tribune that additional police forces had been deployed at several main points in the city to avert any untoward incident.
Police also detained 12 Shibir activists from different parts of the city when they were trying to destabilise the situation, Alam also said.
Due to the threat of vandalism and sabotage, buses on long route did not leave Rajshahi city.
However, all light vehicles like rickshaws, auto rickshaws, motorcycles, CNG, human hauliers and micro busses were seen moving on the highway in a limited scale. But rail communication was normal like any normal day.
Meanwhile, at least 11 Shibir activists were sent to jail yesterday afternoon in connection with the case filed over beating up of law enforcers on Tuesday that left four policemen severely injured.
They were sent to jail after being produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in the district.
The Shibir men are Masud Rana, Mostafizur Rahman, Rabiul Islam, Naiyar, Jony, Ramajan, Faisal, Sujan, Atiq, Sohel Rana and Shahinur Islam, police sources said.
Sub-Inspector Jahangir Alam filed the case with Shah Makhdhum police station on Tuesday night.
About 60 to 70 Shibir leaders and activists were made accused in the case while 49 are named, said Sayedur Rahman Bhuiyan, officer-in-charge of Shah Makhdum police station.
On Tuesday, four policemen were injured as activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir, students’ front of the Jamaat e Islami, attacked law enforcers in Shalbagan area of Rajshahi city. Shibir activists also beat them up with gun after snatching it from the policemen.
The injured are constables Amzad Hossain and Shafikul Islam, Sub-Inspector of Shah Makhdum police station Jahangir and police van driver constable Moinul Islam.
Amzad and Shafikul are undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) while Jahangir and Moinul took primary treatment at the hospital, police said.
