The BNP will not be allowed to hold any rally in the country if its Senior Vice-chairman Tarique Rahman does not apologise for his derogatory comments on Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, central Chhatra League General Secretary Siddique Nazmul Alam said yesterday.
Addressing a programme arranged to mark Chhatra League’s 67th founding anniversary at Aparajeyo Bangla on the campus of Dhaka University, he called on Chhatra League activists to be prepared to face BNP men on streets tomorrow.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Abdus Sobhan Golap and Awami League Joint Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif were among those who inaugurated the programme.
Obaidul Quader, also a former Chhatra League leader, said 2015 would be a year full of challenges as the BNP and its associate organisations might create anarchy in the name of democratic movement.
“This is why you [Chhatra League activists] must play a crucial role to resist any attempt to create anarchy,” he said.
The minister urged Chhatra League leaders to cooperate with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for making Bangladesh a developed country.
Bodiuzzaman Shohag, president of Chhatra League, said the next central Chhatra League council would be held very soon.
“We have already held councils in half of the districts and are gradually working to complete the rest,” he said.
As part of the celebration, a slew of Chhatra League activists joined a huge procession which paraded through different streets before ending outside Chhatra League’s Bangabandhu Avenue office.
Chhatra League activists also cut a cake at Curzon Hall late yesterday night in celebration of the anniversary. They hoisted the national flag and the party flag of Awami League at the party office early this morning.
They also laid floral wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu in the morning.
Founded on January 4, 1948, Chhatra League started its journey as a student organisation at the instruction of Bangabandhu.
This year, the anniversary was celebrated a day earlier as today is Eid-e-Miladunnabi, which is a public holiday.
