BNP: Govt to be liable for any untoward situation

BNP Publication and Publicity Secretary Zainul Abdin Farroque has said the government will be responsible if any untoward situation takes place during January 5 rally.

A BNP delegation led by party Chairperson Khaleda Zia's advisor Abdul Awal Mintoo went to DMP office on Saturday morning to seek permission for holding rally on January 5. But they failed to meet any DMP official.

“We are firm to hold the rally on January 5 and the government to be blamed for any unpleasant situation on that day,” Farroque told the Dhaka Tribune.

The BNP is scheduled to hold a rally on January 5 in the capital to observe what they said “Democracy Killing Day”.

Earlier, the party sought permission from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and Public Works Department to hold the January 5 rally either at Suhrawardy Udyan, in front of the party’s Nayapaltan headquarters or at Shapla square in Matijheel.

However, they are yet to get the permission.

The ruling Awami League also announced to hold a rally on the same day to observe what they said “Democracy Protection Day”.

The 10th national election was held on January 5, 2013. The BNP-led alliances and many other political parties boycotted it.

Awami League formed the government for the second time in a row with absolute majority and Jatiya Party became the main opposition though three of its lawmakers are also cabinet members.
