'BNP firm to hold January 5 rally'

The BNP has expressed its determination to hold the pre-scheduled January 5 rally in the capital to observe what they said “Democracy Killing Day”.

“We are determined to hold the rally to mark the Democracy Killing Day. It is up to the government whether it will give us permission. But we will make it a success by any means,” Abdul Moyeen Khan, party's standing committee member, told journalists.

He made the statement while visiting the grave of party founder Ziaur Rahman, marking the founding anniversary of Chhatra Dal on Friday, hours after the student wing of the party cancelled its pre-scheduled programme.

Despite of getting the permission, Chhatra Dal has decided not to hold a rally in the capital today saying the permission given was too late for them to make preparations.

However, the leaders and activists of the front organisation of the BNP visited Zia's grave and placed wreaths.

Earlier, the party sought permission to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police and Public Works Department to hold the January 5 rally either in Suhrawardy Udyan, in front of party's Nayapaltan headquarters or Shapla square.

But, they are yet to get the permission. A delegation of BNP went to the DMP office on Thursday but failed to meet any official.

The ruling Awami League also announced to hold a rally on the same day to observe what they said “Democracy Protection Day”.

The 10th national election was held on January 5, 2013. The BNP-led alliances and many other political parties boycotted it.

Awami League formed the government for the second time in a row with absolute majority and Jatiya Party became the main opposition though three of its lawmakers are also cabinet members.
