Chhatra League blames BNP for Bakshibazar clash

The Chhatra League yesterday blamed the BNP and its associate bodies for the clash at Bakshibazar in the capital.

They said they just tried to “protest” the attacks by them on Dhaka University (DU), Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) and Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) on Wednesday.

The BNP however blamed the Chhatra League saying they were attacked by the Awami League and Chhatra League men.

The student wing of the ruling Awami League termed this a “propaganda” against them.

To protest this “propaganda,” they held a press conference at the central office at Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital.

At the press conference, H M Badiuzzaman Shohag, president of the ruling party's student wing, said BNP top “terrorists” had attacked DU, Buet and Dmch.

“Chhatra League activists went to protest it and when a clash ensued, we ordered our activists to leave the scene.”

When Shohag was asked about the Chhatra League's involvement in the clash, which was reported by media yesterday, he said: “They are not BCL men; they are rebels of BNP”.

The BNP-led 20-Party Alliance set December 27 for holding a rally in Gazipur and its leader Khaleda Zia asked her party leaders to make it a success at any cost.

The Chhatra League meanwhile declared to hold a rally at the same place on the same day to protest the recent remarks of the BNP's Senior Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman on Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

When Shohag was asked about the December 27 rally, he said: “Chhatra League has already completed all their relevant activities to make the rally a success.”

“BCL will stage the rally at any cost”, he said, adding: “If any chaos is created on that day over the rally, the BNP has to take the responsibility”.

He also said they would announce further programmes against the BNP until Tarique apologised for his remarks on the Bangabandhu.

At least 40 persons from both sides, including Awami League MP Chhabi Biswas, were injured during the clash on Wednesday.

Chhatra League Vice Presidents Joydeb Nandi, Mohiuddin Mahi and Joint General Secretary Mostafhizur Rahman Mostaque, Dhaka University Chhatra League General Secretary Omar Sharif were present at the press conference.
