The statement of the anti-corruption commission’s acting chairman on BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was irresponsible, said the party’s acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday.
“Shahabuddin’s statement was irresponsible as an individual holding a constitutional position cannot make such comments. He spoke like a political leader,” Fakhrul said while addressing a press briefing at BNP’s Nayapaltan headquarters in the capital.
The acting ACC chairman on Tuesday said Khaleda should look at herself in the mirror before describing the commission as an organisation that provided impunity.
Demanding withdrawal of the acting ACC chairman’s statement, Fakhrul also claimed that the acting chairman was the former president of Chhatra League at Rajshahi University.
The BNP leader said the country’s human rights situation was not only under threat but was also on the brink of destruction as the state itself had taken away human rights.
“At a time when the democratic countries across the globe have been trying to protect human rights, Bangladesh is violating those rights,” he said.
Fakhrul alleged the government had been using law enforcers to repress not only the opposition leaders but also the general people. Urging the government not to increase the prices of gas and electricity, the BNP leader said his party is determined to protest the government’s price hike decision.
He reiterated that non-stop agitation would be staged since the day the prices would be hiked.
Condemning the arrest warrant against BNP Senior Vice-chairman Tarique Rahman, Fakhrul said the government has been conspiring to stop democratic movement by lodging false cases against opposition leaders and activists.
